It’s easy to see why this tranquil island oasis draws so many diving enthusiasts.

From the iconic Blue Hole to the mysterious MV Karwela wreck, each site has its own unique allure. Getting excited yet? Read on to uncover the magic of one of the world’s top diving destinations.

The Blue Hole: Explore the ruins of the Azure Window on Gozo’s west coast

Perhaps the most iconic of Gozo’s diving spots is the Blue Hole. Formerly the site of the famous Azure Window, the Blue Hole attracts many visitors to Dwejra each year. Although the Azure Window has since collapsed, the rocky ruins have become a haven for Mediterranean marine life.

The natural rock formation of the Blue Hole, resembling an upright tube carved by the forces of nature, serves as a sheltered pool, with an archway that leads divers into the open sea.

Divers can descend into the Blue Hole and explore the vibrant marine life, including parrotfish, octopus, and the occasional moray eel. At seven metres deep, you’ll encounter the underwater arch, and the journey through the archway reveals a stunning landscape under the sea.

While Dwejra’s Blue Hole did lose its most famous landmark with the collapse of the Azure Window, don’t let that stray you from trying out this scuba diving adventure. The ruins of the Azure Window have since transformed this Gozo dive into an exciting labyrinth of caverns.

In order to make the most of this underwater adventure, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, it can be near impossible to access the Blue Hole when winds blow from the west as dangerous waves come crashing onto the cliffs of Dwejra. So do make sure to plan accordingly and account for potential weather cancellations!

Second, getting to the entrance of the Blue Hole is actually a challenge in itself. Divers must carry their equipment over slippery rocks to reach the edge of the dive site. It’s well worth the effort, though, as the Blue Hole is an alluring Gozo scuba spot you won’t want to miss.

MV Karwela: Travel through time in this Malta shipwreck

If you’ve looked into wreck diving in Malta, chances are you’ve seen photos of the wreckage of MV Karwela.

The MV Karwela wreck is an artificial reef formed by the purposeful sinking of a former passenger ferry. This Gozo dive spot lies at a depth of 40 metres, making it an ideal spot for advanced divers. The star of this Gozo shipwreck is its staircase, but you can explore the entirety of the 863-passenger ferry when wreck diving here.

Fascinatingly, the wreck has been colonised by a variety of marine life, offering divers the chance to explore its decks and corridors – now home to schools of fish, colourful sponges, and corals. Brace yourself for a hauntingly beautiful dive experience aboard the MV Karwela as you witness the transformation of an imposing man-made structure into a thriving underwater ecosystem.

To reach the site, prepare to swim out from a shallow reef for about four minutes. You’ll start to make out the ferry’s silhouette, then get ready to glide down those iconic stairs! If you’re a more experienced diver, you will absolutely delight in exploring the ship’s two decks and dark engine room. When you’re finished scoping out Gozo’s best wreck site, head back up to the reef to spy on more marine life.

And if you’re left wanting more after investigating the MV Karwela, there’s yet another wreck dive to check out nearby. Adjacent to the Karwela, and just as deep, lies the MV Xlendi shipwreck. The ship is upside down, providing Gozo scuba divers with a clear view of the 80-metre ship’s propeller. However, keep in mind that this is a challenging dive and isn’t suitable for beginners.

Gozo’s best underwater cave: Nature’s cathedral in the sea

Cathedral Cave, located near Għasri Valley, is renowned for its stunning natural architecture. To begin the dive, you must park atop the narrow gorge called Wied il-Għasri and hike 26 metres down to a tiny pebble beach. Warning: this hike isn’t so pleasant on the way back when you have to carry all your scuba gear uphill!

Getting into the water from the beach, the cave’s entrance is only 5 metres deep, making this underwater cave in Gozo suitable for all levels of scuba divers. You will want an experienced guide with you, however, as the opening of the cavern can be tricky to spot. When you enter the mouth of the cave, you’ll be led to a large domed cavern that extends 15 metres above the surface.

Surfacing in the cavern is where the beauty of Cathedral Cave really unfolds. The cathedral-like experience is a result of natural skylight playing off the water. What’s more, the large air pocket allows you to chat with your fellow divers, adding another surreal element to the experience, thanks to the cave’s natural acoustics. Cathedral Cave truly is a unique underwater cave in Gozo that captivates all the senses.
